Fundraising and Charitable work

Throughout the year, we hold various events to help raise money both for the school and other worthy causes, such as Families in Ukraine, Children in Need, and WWF. We have also supported local causes, including monthly litter picks in Bedale, local food banks, and fundraising for various charities.

Shoe Box Appeal

We would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated items for the Shoebox Appeal. These shoeboxes will be sent to children in need around the world spreading joy on Christmas Day.

Children in Need

A HUGE thank you to Gallone Ices Bedale for their visit! All the children really enjoyed their ice cream for Children In Need!
Well done to everyone who is completing our Run Pudsey Challenge 25 so far, we have raised £1,400 which is amazing.

Litter Picking

Thank you to everyone who came to the litter pick on Sunday.

Red Nose Day

Crazy hair… don’t care!!
All the children looked fabulous today to help raise money  for Comic Relief  with their crazy and imaginative hairstyles. We managed to raise £248.60 for a very good cause whilst having fun with our hair. Well done everyone!

Princess Trust

We are so proud of Charlotte who has made a lovely decision to grow her beautiful hair and cut it for Little Princess Trust!  Tonight she is having her hair cut, Well done Charlotte!

In EYFS we are learning about the Chinese culture and how important the community is. Today we went to Dales Centre Bedale to meet the ladies and gentlemen who access the service, we enjoyed sharing the cakes we decorated and reading stories.
Thank you to Daphne, the volunteers, and the clients of the Dales Centre for letting us visit. We are looking forward to seeing some of you again on Thursday for our Chinese celebration.

Healthy Eating Award

We have just been awarded our silver award as a Healthy School! We have been working hard this term to achieve the criteria, this time working on the food in school and embedding healthy food choices. As part of this, we have been thinking about the food that we supply in school and how we can encourage healthier choices, for example through our salad cart in the hall every day. Across the curriculum, we teach the children all about food groups through Science, and practice making healthy food through DT. Year 4 recently made their own vegetable soups which filled school with a delicious smell!
Watch out for our next healthy eating challenge which starts after the February half term which is sponsored by VegPower. The veg is taking over and you have to eat them to defeat them!

Eco Warriors

We are proud to share our big green flag to show that we are an eco-friendly school. We are working on this year's action plan by placing compost buckets around the grounds for all the biodegradable waste, such as apple cores and banana skins from break times. We are also working hard on the Samaritans Purse shoebox appeal.

Eco Warriors have been very busy recently. Mr Booth very kindly put up our new flag on the backfield, which looks amazing. This shows that we are working hard to make our school environmentally friendly.

This term we have been looking at electricity and ways to reduce water waste. So, we have asked every class to choose an energy monitor so we can save electricity in school. Their role will be to make sure lights and interactive whiteboards are switched off if nobody is in the room. We also had a virtual assembly with Yorkshire Water where they gave us top tips on how to reduce water waste; they also did a workshop with Year 5 about Water Aid.

Eco Warriors asked every class to create a shoe box for Operation Christmas Child. These shoeboxes, which are packed with essentials and lovely gifts, will be sent around the world and will bring joy to so many children who have very little. Thank you to everyone who donated items for the shoeboxes.

Rainforest

As part of our rainforest topic, the pupils in Year Six annually raise money in support of a charity which helps look after this vital resource for our planet.

The Year 6 children learn about threats to different habitats around the world including the Amazon Rainforest and the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. Why these small islands? Because, as the children discover, this is the only remaining place on Earth where orangutans can be found in their natural habitat. We use the book, 'There's a Rang Tan in My Bedroom' as a launch and expand our research in many of our subjects.

The children present their work from Geography, Computing and English to parents in an incredible, emotional afternoon event. The children lead the planning, do all the presenting (tugging more than a few heartstrings!) and are always successful in raising money to safeguard the dwindling number of orangutans.

With the money raised last year (over £200) we were able to sponsor two orangutans AND two mountain gorillas, who are now able to live a long and happy life in a protected habitat. What an amazing achievement. You can find out more about WWF sponsorship here: Adopt an Orangutan | WWF.

This brings the total our pupils have raised while we have been running this unit of work to over £1200 with seven acres of precious forest sponsored too.

Mettupalayam

For twenty years now, we have had links with Mettupalayam in India, supporting the work of the Friends of Mettupalayam (FOM) Click here to visit their Facebook page

FOM is a village-based project supporting children and adults in a very poor rural area of Tamil Nadu, South India. The project, founded in 1985, centred mainly on children, improving their future lives and health through education and better nutrition. In recent years, they have also expanded support to include the elderly, and the disabled.

At Bedale Primary School, we have been involved in raising money for development projects such as building a new school and buying resources to help the community. In previous years, members of staff have visited India as well as having guests from the village here in Bedale to see our school. If you want to know more about our recent work and links with Mettupalayam click here.

Letters to Mettupalayam:
The children from Eco Warriors Club have written letters to the children of Mettupalayam. We wrote letters introducing ourselves, talking about all of our favourite things and asking questions to find out more from the children in India. We also talked about some of the amazing things we have been doing as a club and sharing our successes. Some of the children also created bookmarks inspired by their favourite books, sharing their love for reading for pleasure.

Eco Warriors Club wanted to share their love for reading by making bookmarks, a lot of them with titles or pictures of their favourite book on them. Being kind citizens of the world, our children wanted to send them to the children in Mettupalayam, along with some lovely Christmas cards The children shared a little about themselves, their lives, and their favourite books, hoping to make some new pen pals. We wish everyone in our local, national and global communities a very merry Christmas! Fun Run

Every year in the Summer Term, we hold our annual Fun Run on the school field, which has been a fixture of the school summer for over a decade now. With stalls organised and managed by the Year 6 children, this is always an exciting and popular event for the rest of the school to join in with. Each year, the children decide on a different charity they would like to support.

Eco Warriors

Eco Warriors, which was named Global Awareness club; are delighted to have been nominated for the Picture News Award, celebrating all of their hard work and achievements throughout the last academic year. We are nominated for our work with Hambleton Foodshare, Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoebox Appeal, fundraising for Ukraine, pen pal letters with children in Mettupalayam and last but not least writing letters to David Attenborough and receiving a reply!!

We have signed up to work towards becoming an Eco School and earning our green flag. In order to do this, we have to complete an Environmental Review of our school and create an action plan to improve various aspects around our school and within our local area. Areas of interest are litter, water, energy, healthy living, transport, school grounds, biodiversity, and waste reduction. This work is ongoing, but we have already noticed that making small changes to the way we do things can have a big impact.

MKC

Children in the MKC received a Reading Force book club booklet. How this works is the child reviews a book of their choice, sends the review back to Reading Force for free, and as a thank you they will receive a free book along with the chance to review another book and receive another free book.
