School Games and Sports News
We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2022/23 academic year. Our children have had lots of sporting achievements this year whilst taking part in competitions including cross country, football, sports hall athletics, multiskills, dodgeball, cricket, Quadkids athletics and lots of in-school house competitions. We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sports this year. The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are thrilled to have been recognised for our success. As part of our application, we were asked to fulfill criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year. We look forward to applying once again in 2024!
Sport at Bedale Primary School
At Bedale Primary School, we believe in the power that sport has to support the development of children’s wider skills, qualities and aspirations. Through sport, they can make a positive contribution to our school ethos of Learning and Caring Together, and boost attainment and achievement.
Our sporting events are split into 3 levels, as shown in the diagram below.
Level 1 involves competition within school, including lunchtime and after-school clubs which are open to all abilities of children. We aim to include everyone in sport, competing against pupils of similar ability, including encouraging children to try new sports.
When teams and individuals show a talent in sport, they are given the chance for success at Level 2 and Level 3 events. Here our pupils get a chance to shine in sport and are encouraged to develop their talent further wherever possible. These Level 2 and 3 events often include sponsorship and support from businesses and other agencies such as the North Yorkshire Youth Games, RFU-supported Tag Rugby, and Drax Power’s Kwik Cricket tournament.
Squads for level 2 and 3 competitions are selected based on a number of factors including attendance and attitude at clubs. To help with Level 2 and 3 events, the school may offer extra training sessions for the squad, who are supported by other pupils who may compete in future years or in other competitions. Parents with coaching skills and local clubs have been involved in supporting the school’s success over the past few years. We also rely on parents’ support to accompany children to events and, of course, to cheer them on and console or celebrate with them when it’s all over!
Throughout the year, we take part in many different sports events. These range from inter-house competitions through to cluster and regional events. In certain competitions, winning teams can also qualify to compete at county-level.
Our sports captains help to run some of our events, especially house competitions and tournaments held at our school with the support of other children. We hold regular intra-house tournaments in a range of sports. This section of the website is updated termly with a summary of our sports news. Karate News
Thomas would like to tell everyone that on Sunday he passed his Yellow Belt grading. He did very well, after a lot of practicing and hard work he has now moved from Orange Belt to Yellow and can move up to the senior class. Mummy, Daddy and Sophia are very proud of their superstar.
Sporting Experience
Theo (year 2) has had an amazing experience this Easter.
He went with his football team Richmondshire Pro Player U7’s to Holland for 6 days and played in his first-ever international tournament.
He played against teams from Malta, France, Holland and the UK. They were placed 6th out of 24 teams.
He’s had the best time and is so unbelievably proud of himself and his team.
Our Very Own Champion !
Darcey attended the Children’s National Kyu Grade Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. We are so proud to announce that Darcey is the National Champion in the 8-9 years female category, 7th kyu and below. What a superstar.
Gymnastic Champion
Charley entered sports for all gymnastics competition this weekend and came first out of 34 in her age category!! We are all very proud. Well done !
Year 3/4 and 5/6 Dodgeball Competitions
Year 5/6 Girls Richmonshire Finals
Congratulations to our Girls football team, who battled their way to a fantastic first place in the Richmondshire Area Finals today. After winning their group, the team overcame a dramatic semi-final penalty shootout before winning a tight final 1-0. Next stop, the County Finals in York in January.
Cross Country
What a brilliant day we had for this year’s Cross Country event. As we made our way to Richmond in the morning the bus was filled with a mix of excitement and nerves for the day ahead. Each race was made up of a track around Richmond School and Bedale was racing against 16 other schools in the first of two heats. The children showed incredible perseverance and determination which was brilliant to see. A huge well done to all of the children who took part, they should be so proud of themselves. Lots of our children placed in the top eight in their heat so we are now excitedly awaiting the results of qualifiers for the next round.
2022-23 Sports News
Cricket
Congratulations to our Year Five and Six cricket team for becoming Yorkshire County Champions in the Dynamos Cricket competition. The girls played magnificently throughout the tournament, showing amazing teamwork and flashes of outstanding individual skill in the face of some difficult and challenging matches on their way to the title on 11th July 2023. An amazing achievement.
Cross Country
A huge well done to everyone who took part in the cross country competition on the 4th October 2022, all the children who represented Bedale Primary School did an amazing job, it was our best EVER result! Well done to the 9 children who qualified for the next round Reuben, Ayla, Charley, Mollie, Lucas, Fraya, Leo, Freddie and Harrison.
Boys Football League Competition
On 11th October the Year 5/6 boys travelled a short distance to Crakehall to play in a local football competition. All the boys represented Bedale brilliantly, showing great teamwork and 'chemistry' as the boys kept on repeating. Lots of stand out performances and ruthless finishing rewarded us with 3 victories. 5-2 against Leeming and Londonderry/Pickhill, 8-0 vs RAF Leeming and 4-1 to round the afternoon off against the hosts, Crakehall. Well done to everyone and we look forward to hearing more about the next tournament opportunity.
Girls Cluster Football Competition
On Monday 17th October, Year 5/6 girls travelled to Bedale High school to play in a football tournament. They all represented Bedale brilliantly and showed great sportsmanship and teamwork skills. The girls worked together to become the undefeated winners of the competition, not conceding in all 4 games played! 5-0 against Masham, 8-0 against Thornton Watlass and Hackforth, 9-0 against Pickhill and a whopping 10-0 against Leeming and Londonderry.

Cross Country Final
On 10th November 2022 children from year 3, 4, 5 and 6 went to Giggleswick to compete in the cross country final. The conditions started off wet and muddy and just got worse as the races went on! There were children falling over and losing shoes but they still got up and carried on. Every child ran amazingly, Miss Davies and Mrs Read were so proud of each of them. Results were Mollie 4th, Ruben 5th, Charlie 22nd, Lucas 32nd, Fraya 18th, Harrison 26th, Leo 17th and Freddie 30th. Well done boys and girls great efforts all round.
Boys Cluster Football Competition
Despite being cold and foggy, the rain held off for an exciting morning of football at Bedale High School for the level 1 Cluster Event on the 14th November. With seven participating teams from around the area, it was the best attended football event in recent years. The boys were full of high spirits following their previous tournament success last month. The tournament started with a bit of a shock. In the first game, Pickhill scored first which motivated the boys to play more as a team. That was the only goal Bedale conceded and Pickhill eventually finished 2nd place. From there, Bedale were critical with their finishing and produced many moments of quality. From the 6 victories from 6 games, everyone (apart from goalkeeper, Zach - who kept 5 clean sheets!) managed to get on the score sheet! Freddie 5 goals, Leo with 4, Fred 2, Kane 2, Ethan 2, Mate and Lewis. Well done boys!
KS1 Multiskills
On Friday 18th November, 18 pupils from Year 2 went across to Bedale High School to take part in a KS1 Multi-skills event. There were 8 teams in total from different schools in our local area and we all did so well! We enjoyed practising a range of different skills such as throwing, running, jumping and balancing! When the scores were added at the end, the results were announced. Our 3 teams finished 6th, 3rd and 1st! Well done to all the children for the exceptional effort and behaviour.

Sports Hall Athletics Competitions
On Wednesday 30th November, almost 30 children from Year 5 and 6 travelled to Richmond School to take part in an indoor athletics competition. Throughout the day, a total of 16 primary schools took part in the event; we were really pleased to come in 7th place after facing some tough competition.
On Tuesday 6th December, another group of Y5/6 children went to compete, this time placing 2nd out of seven schools. Events included throwing, jumping, running and
obstacle course races. It was a busy, exciting morning for everyone who competed – there was a lot of cheering and it was wonderful to see super sportsmanship, teamwork and fabulous behaviour. Well done everyone and congratulations to our silver medallists!
Year 4 Net and Wall House Competition
On Thursday 1st December 2022 Year 4 competed against each other in a game that involved agility, tactics and reactions. There was some fantastic officiating by Oscar, Nico and Freya. Everyone picked the rules up quickly and had a good time, despite the cold hands and fingers. Wycar won 3 games. Chantry won 2 games. Hird won 1 game. Amen won 2 games. Wycar overall winners.
Year 1 Throwing and Catching House Competition
On Monday 5th December the Year 1 children all took part in a house throwing and catching competition. The children did a super job of cheering one another on and demonstrating their wonderful throwing and catching skills. 1st Place was Chantry, 2nd place Amen, 3rd place Hird and 4th place Wycar. Well done to all the children for a fantastic effort!
Level 2 Boys and Girls Football Finals
On Thursday 8th December, the year 5 and 6 girls and boys teams represented our school in the Level 2 cluster football competition. It was touch and go whether the event would take place with the icy conditions and snow warnings. Thankfully it did, and the teams were wrapped up and ready.
GIRLS
The girls team braved the cold to face four other teams at Richmond on Thursday morning. Facing some tough opponents as well as the weather, the girls won three of their four games (1-0; 3-0 and 5-0) only conceding twice in their defeat to the eventual champions, Crakehall (0-2). They headed home with silver medals as vice-champions after finishing second in the league. Congratulations, well done girls and good luck to Crakehall in the finals at York early next year.
BOYS
The boys drew the first match but went on to win the next 3, making them group winners! Therefore, the boys progress to the 3rd level. What a brilliant afternoon topped off with hot chocolate and a sneaky cheeseburger! It was around 10 years ago since Bedale had a sporting team in the level 3 stage and that was our cricket team, featuring Josh Coburn and Lily Crosthwaite (see below). Maybe there is another sporting superstar in the making?
U11’s COUNTY FINAL
After an initial postponement, the day of the u11's County Final finally arrived. Despite the glorious sunshine, a strong wind blew, causing slight concern for the players. After arriving at York College, the energy lifted and there was an exciting buzz around the grounds. The games were of high intensity and the quality of play was significantly higher than in previous games. The boys stayed as a unit after falling to two defeats which meant there was no chance of winning. Knowing this allowed the boys to relax and play with a bigger smile on their faces, securing two draws with goals from Freddie, Leo, and Kane. Even though the boys didn't win, it was an incredible achievement to represent the school at that level. Everyone should hold their heads high with pride. Well done boys!
Year 5 House Football Tournament
At the end of the autumn term, Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed a house football tournament. Despite the cold weather, everyone played to the best of their ability and showed fantastic teamwork. Every house played each other and although goals were few and far between in the first few matches, there were many shots on target. The talented goalkeepers certainly worked hard. Well done to everybody for taking part and particularly to Hird for being overall winners.
EYFS & KS1 Sports Day
What a great afternoon we had for the EYFS and key stage 1 sports day which took place on Monday 3rd July. The children all showed great perseverance taking part in lots of mini races including hopping hurdles, wobbly egg and spoon, super skipping, speedy bean bags and fantastic football dribbling! The afternoon was finished with some fast-paced running races cheered on by all the grown-ups. Well done to all of the children who took part and showed wonderful teamwork and behaviour throughout the afternoon. A special well done to the EYFS children who did amazingly taking part in their very first school sports day! Thank you for everyone who attended.
Key Stage 2 Sports Day
What a fantastic afternoon for key stage 2 sports day we had. Wycar house emerged victorious! With the children giving their all, the event ran smoothly. From sprinting to skipping, sack and long-distance races, everyone had a great time. Well done to all who participated!
Yorkshire Cricket Finals
Bedale Primary School have become the Yorkshire Champions in the Girls version of this year's Y5/6 Dynamos Cricket tournament, run by the Yorkshire Cricket Board.
The girls played five games during the county finals at Hunslet Nelson Cricket Club in Leeds, facing schools from across Yorkshire who had all qualified from their respective regions of Yorkshire. After some thrilling batting, athletic fielding and precision bowling, the outcome eventually came down to the final over of the day. Sheffield’s Dore Primary School couldn’t quite get the twelve runs needed from the last five balls and Bedale Primary School were the delighted and well-deserved winners.
Dynamos Cricket is a short-format version of the full game of cricket with teams of eight players and five-ball overs. Each player bowls one over and each pair bats for two overs, scoring runs when batting in the usual way with a "free-hit" on offer for wide and no-balls.
Josh Coburn
Having recently signed his first professional contract with Middlesbrough, former pupil Josh Coburn is currently on a season-long loan at Bristol Rovers. It was brilliant to see Josh grab the national headlines with a stunning winning goal in the FA Cup against Premier League Tottenham.
We were also pleased to hear that, alongside his football achievements, Josh has continued to study hard and is now just finishing a BTEC Sports course alongside his scholarship.

Lily Crosthwaite
Another pupil making waves in the footballing world is Lily, a teammate of Josh (above) in our school team for many years. She made her first team debut for Durham in the 2020/21 season and has gone on to become a regular presence in the first-team fold. She also recently joined Josh in being an FA Cup goal scorer following her goal in the fourth round of the 2022-23 season's competition.
